Spheres, or ball pigs, may be the oldest and best known sealing pigs. There are three kinds of spheres: inflatable, solid, and foam. They are ideal in gas gathering systems where pigging may be frequent and the system needs to be automated. Spheres are able to negotiate short radius bends and because they roll freely, they are ideal for pigging laterals where the sphere will drop into the main trunkline and be swept in by the larger pigs.
